Can I use PBS in combination with cluster management tools?

Recommended Posts

In most cases the answer is yes. You will need to check the documentation on the specific product you would like to use. In many cases we have worked with the application vendor to create an integration. In other cases the application vendor may have worked independently from us but for the most part the answer is usually yes. When you look specifically at what constitutes "integration" it may vary widely from vendor to vendor.

In some cases a cluster management system like HP's CMU might monitor running jobs while in other cases like Maui and Torque they might completely replace

the regular PBS Scheduler. The only way to know for sure it to check with the original vendor and their documentation or send in an email to pbssupport@altair.com.

Its also important to note that PBS Professional is a workload mangement system not a cluster management system. In short this means PBS is intended to deal with the when, how, why and where jobs are placed on nodes. A cluster management system is intended to make sure that your nodes are healthy and running well.

Providing an update to Adam's post...

Due to recent customer requests, we have identified a number of areas where scheduling features in PBS Professional can be enabled through the use of HP's cluster management software package called Cluster Management Utility (CMU).

Please visit http://www.pbsworks.com/Product.aspx?id=36 to download the technical paper, and learn how PBS Professional, a workload management solution, integrates well with HP's CMU. You will also be able to download the CMU PBS Professional Connector package.
