  1. How does PBS monitor MPI jobs?

PBS Professional uses the command "pbs_attach" to attach processes started on all the execution nodes to the head node of an MPI job using the task manager API provided with PBS Professional. This allows PBS to monitor not only the process that launched the mpi job in the submission script but also the processes on the other nodes involved in the job. This provides proper accounting and interactive reporting abilities for MPI jobs within PBS. Unless integration with the task manager API of PBS is done by the MPI vendor we accomplish integration with various MPI libraries via wrapper scripts. Open MPI and LAM-MPI for example, provide options for configuring those libraries for use with PBS when you are building those packages from source.
